“Shang Chi’s” remarkable Labor Day weekend propelled the 36th week of the year to reach 90% of the amount generated during the same week in 2019. This breaks the previous pandemic comp record of 83% set on the 28th week of 2021, paced by an $80M 3-day opening of “Black Widow”. These results had a dramatic impact to our 4-week run rate comparison with 2019, which stands at 67% of the high-water mark from 2019. The velocity of recovery has also reached a new high at 1.63 percentage points per week. If this same pace continues, the industry would hit on October 8th the milestone of a 75% recovery when compared with the same week in 2019. However, September is expected to see VERY LOW returns based on a weak slate of new release, making it virtually impossible to maintain the current velocity of recovery. On the bright side, the outlook is much brighter for studio releases beginning in October and continuing through the rest of the year. Nonetheless, the impressive 90% comp for the week just completed may wind up being an outlier and highlight for the year.
