Night Shayamalan PG-13 mystery thriller “OLD," opening 7/23, hit tracking and looks like new reason for exhibitors to feel good about summer boxoffice recovery. “OLD's" average definite interest score is eight points over norm. Shayamalan ("GLASS," "THE SIXTH SENSE") is major thriller brand name for driving moviegoer interest....

“OLD" looks like four quadrants film. Greatest interest is from -25m (11 points over norm) with +25m next best (nine points over norm). While women are less interested, they're still scoring well. +25f are nine points over norm. Weakest demo: -25f (three points over norm)....

7/23 will also bring Paramount/Hasbro's PG-13 action fantasy sequel "SNAKE EYES." Tracking shows average definite interest score six points over norm. There's high level of interest from three quadrants: -25f are best (11 points over norm) with -25m close second (six points over norm). +25m are also six points over norm. Missing now from 7/23 tracking: SONY/MRC's animated sequel "HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA: TRANSFORMANIA," which started week with very encouraging scores. Looked like "HT4" had booked space on perfect weekend with no family audience competition. Then Sony sent moving truck to bring it to 10/1. If Sony keeps that reservation, "HT4" & MGM/Bron's animated sequel "THE ADDAMS FAMILY 2" will fight needless battle for family ticket sales. ...

With Disney/Marvel's "BLACK WIDOW" potentially this summer's biggest blockbuster, makes sense that Scarlett Johansson & Disney are teaming up for another high profile feature. "TOWER OF TERROR" project is based on Disney theme park attraction going back to 1994 at Disney's Hollywood, Florida location and subsequently added Disneyland parks in Anaheim, France & Japan....

"TOWER" is horror thriller about people disappearing after hotel elevator they're in is struck by lightning. Johansson is producing "TOWER" with Jonathan Lia ("BRUNO MARS: THAT'S WHAT I LIKE"), but no word yet if she'll also star. Genre project doesn't sound like right casting for superstar Johansson. Same title with storyline elements was first used by Disney for thrill ride comedy adventure TV movie for "THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY" series that aired 10/26/1997 on ABC-TV. ...

TV episode was Disney's maiden effort to turn theme park attractions into films. It was followed by: "MISSION TO MARS" (2000), "THE COUNTRY BEARS" (2002), "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL" (2003) & "THE HAUNTED MANSION" (2003). Of these, only "PIRATES" actually worked at boxoffice, spawning four more episodes in blockbuster franchise. New much anticipated Disneyland ride spinoff "JUNGLE CRUISE," starring Dwayne Johnson & Emily Blunt, opens 7/30. ...

31st annual Gotham Awards will be handed out 11/29 at New York's Cipriani Wall Street, kick starting 2021-22 awards season. Plans are for live event instead of hybrid live/virtual show that was held last 1/11. Gotham's best picture award to "NOMADLAND" was early indication of its strength that culminated with best picture Oscar win. That was, however, only Gotham/Oscar match in prime categories (Picture, Directing & Acting)....
