With ‘Mank’, David Fincher Returns to the Best Director Oscars Race

While the existential threat of the coronavirus pandemic looms large over the industry, let’s not lose sight of the fact that Hollywood studios are still producing, and releasing (mostly on-line) some exceptional films.  As November begins, the annual awards season is revving up, bringing attention to some of the latest awards candidates.  Last Thursday, Netflix provided a preview screening for critics of its upcoming drama Mank.  Based on nearly unanimous enthusiastic response, the film appears likely to be considered for awards in many categories.  One likely nom includes Best Director for David Fincher, whom many claim was robbed of a rightful win for The Social Network at 83rd Oscar Academy Awards in 2011.  Amanda Seyfried is drawing attention as a possible dark horse candidate for Best Actress.
